Chile Earthquake Earth s Axis

Chile Earthquake Earth s Axis, Strong aftershocks have struck Chile again, rocking the battered town of Concepcion and sending panicked residents fleeing.2a0413b431s axis1 Chile Earthquake Earth s Axis

Soldiers deployed in the city urged people to evacuate following Wednesday’s temblors and the authorities issued a tsunami warning.

Media correspondent said there was pandemonium everywhere as people rushed to get to higher ground even though the city is quite far away from the sea, making the possibility of a tsunami very remote.

No damage or injuries were recorded in the aftershocks that came as Michelle Bachelet, the outgoing president, called for calm and asked people to stop hoarding supplies and help with relief efforts.

Speaking in the Chilean capital, Santiago, on Wednesday, she said: “We don’t have shortage. There is enough food, so everyone has to remain calm in places where stores are closed.

“We will replenish the stores. Banks are beginning to open … that is to say we will return to relative normality,” she said on national television.

Stents in Arteries

Stents in Arteries, Stents, small metal scaffolding devices placed inside blood vessels across the heart, are used to treat conditions that outcome when arteries turn out to be narrow or blocked.1ba88fdd33teries Stents in Arteries

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton underwent a procedure to position two stents in one of his coronary arteries Thursday after experiencing chest “discomfort,” his foundation said.

A stent is extremely able at reducing chest pain and treating heart disease, said Dr. Clyde Yancy, president of the American Heart Association.

In 2004, Clinton underwent a quadruple bypass operation to free four blocked arteries. For someone who has a history of heart problems, heart attack may be the first concern, Yancy said.

Putting two stents in a coronary artery suggests how the problem was that one of the bypass grafts completely closed, and doctors had to fix his regular artery in the heart, said Dr. Michael Lee, assistant clinical professor in the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. Another possibility is how the bypass graft itself was blocked, but this would have required just one stent, he said.

News 12 School Closings

News 12 School Closings, Long Island mom Alison Giangregorio read the story of Gigi Jordan with tears streaming down her face.

She c6b71ad8143island News 12 School Closingsried for Jude, the 8-year-old autistic son Jordan allegedly killed in a Manhattan hotel suite last week.

But she cried for Jordan, too. She said she felt such a strong connection to the tortured mother, she even considered sending her flowers. Here is her story:

I feel for his mother. I can empathize with her pain and can even understand what drove this mother to an unthinkable solution.

It’s not that I condone what she did, but I can relate to the feeling of desperation she must have felt.

I am the mother of a nonverbal 8-year-old boy with autism – just like Gigi Jordan. Like Gigi Jordan, I stay home to care for my son.

If, by the time I die, he can say, “I love you,” I would faint. That would be great. I just want him to be able to dress himself so he’s not totally dependent on others for everything. What frightens me most is that nobody will be there to care for him when I’m gone.

I took him to the dentist today, and they had to restrain him and put the bite blocks in. He screamed through the whole thing. But toward the end, the nurse said it was almost finished, and he said “okay.” The nurse had no idea what a gift that was.

When I’m around other people with “typical” kids and people start sharing their problems, I feel like such a downer. It’s hard to find people who truly understand. It’s isolating.

When I get really down, I have to tell myself that no matter how bad it is, it could be worse. I actually cheer myself up thinking that at least I’m not a mother in Africa hiding from rebels who want to steal my children. That’s my coping mechanism.

To educate a child with autism is very costly. Many families have to battle with their school district to get appropriate services for their child. There is insurance discrimination for people with autism. Services are lacking when a child reaches adulthood. Individuals with autism are at a higher risk for abuse, both physically and sexually. The list is endless.

God gave me Nicky the way he is, and while I would be first in line for a safe way to make his autism go away, I’m deathly afraid to do anything experimental that might harm him.

If I had the financial resources like Gigi Jordan, I would hire a staff of special education teachers and speech therapists. With a staff of three or four, my son would be “on task” constantly from the time he wakes until the time he is sleeping. Imagine wanting that for your child.

I don’t know what her staff was like, but even with all that money, she didn’t find the help she felt she needed. It’s a very lonely existence, and there’s not one place to get the answers. There isn’t one thing that’s going to fix our kids. And with all her money, maybe she went down a path she regretted. I don’t know, but my heart breaks thinking about it.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and my other son – who’s 10 years old and “typical” – is preparing to do elementary school assemblies with my husband on “How to Be a Friend to Someone with Autism.” We feel that starting at the elementary level will give us a greater chance to reach the leaders of tomorrow who can make the changes we need.

India, Pak Nuclear War Can Cause Climate Cooling

1108933ca3ooling India, Pak Nuclear War Can Cause Climate CoolingUNITED NATIONS: India, Pak Nuclear War Can Cause Climate Cooling, A nuclear war between India and Pakistan could cause severe climate cooling and may have a devastating impact on agriculture worldwide, says a report jointly produced by Japan and Australia on nuclear-non proliferation and disarmament.

“Just a limited regional nuclear exchange, for example between India and Pakistan, with each side attacking the other’s major cities with 50 low-yield Hiroshima-sized weapons, would throw up major concentrations of soot into the stratosphere which would remain there for long enough to cause unprecedented climate cooling worldwide, with major disruptive effects on global agriculture,” the report says.

It reveals that during the eighties scientists had conducted research on the impact of nuclear war on the climate and found the possibility of pollution of atmosphere by massive amounts of debris and smoke would block out the sunlight for decades and lead to a “nuclear winter”.

This would kill many plants and animals, drastically changing ecological balances, cause famines and lead to breakdown of communities not directly affected by nuclear explosions, says the report produced by International Commission for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.

23 killed in Twin Iraq Attacks

6198206234ttacks 23 killed in Twin Iraq AttacksBAGHDAD: Staggered explosions killed 23 people Wednesday including the governor of Anbar, Iraqi officials said, in the latest violence to roil a turbulent province that is still struggling to stamp out the remnants of the al-Qaida insurgency.

The western province of Anbar is strategically important because it was once the heartland of support for al-Qaida linked militants before American officials paid Iraqi fighters to join a pro-government force.

Police official Lt. Col. Imad al-Fahdawi said two bombs exploded in Anbar’s capital of Ramadi, 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of Baghdad. He says a suicide bomber in a car caused the first blast on the main road near the provincial administration buildings.

Gov. Qassim al-Fahdawi, the deputy police chief and other officials came to inspect the damage, the police official said, when a suicide bomber on foot detonated a vest full of explosives nearby.

The governor and deputy police chief were killed and other officials wounded, al-Fahdawi said. Police have put a curfew in place, he added.

“The leadership in the province have requested support from U.S. forces in response to the attacks near the provincial government center in Ramadi,” said military spokesman Lt. Col. Curtis Hill. He said American forces were helping evacuate casualties, establish security and forensic investigation.
